Bukchon Bolkki Band is inspired by bolkki (볼끼), a traditional Korean winter accessory from the Joseon period. It was worn as part of everyday outerwear, wrapped around the sides of the face and tied over the head or the back.

The Bukchon Bolkki Band aims to keep the historical spirit of the bolkki while offering a practical and elegant winter accessory that is fun to make.

Construction

The bolkki is worked flat. The top piece is worked first, with a cable running from one end to the other. Stitches are then picked up along one side. A Latvian braid is worked, followed by the back piece in stocking stitch, and a second Latvian braid along the opposite side of the cable. The bolkki is then joined to close the band, and ties are worked at each end.

Sizes and Measurements

1 (2) 3

a. Lenght: approx. 47 (52) 57 cm [18½ (20½) 22½]

b. Back width: approx. 14 (14) 14 cm [5½ (5½) 5½ in]

c. Side width: approx. 6 (6) 6 cm [2¼ (2¼) 2¼ in]

Finished measurements may vary if gauge differs.

Yarn

Any yarn that meets the gauge.

Grey bolkki: 100 (100) 100 g Børstet Alpakka (brushed alpaca) from Sandnes Garn (110 m / 120 yds = 50 g).

Brown and blue bolkki: 50 (50) 50 g Alpaca Air from Gazzal (150 m / 164 yds = 50 g).

A bolkki made in brushed alpaca will result in a denser and warmer band, while blow yarn will result in a lighter, more airy band that also stretches more.

Only a small amount of contrasting colour yarn is required for the Latvian braids, making this project suitable for leftovers.

Suggested Needles

Circular needles 6.5 or 7 mm [US 10.5 or 10.75] (60, 80, and/or 100 cm [24, 32, and/or 40 in]).

Gauge

14 sts x approx. 21 rows in stocking stitch on gauge-size needles = 10 x 10 cm [4 x 4 in].

12 sts x approx. 10 rows in cable stitch on gauge-size needles = 6 x 5 cm [2¼ x 2 in].

The grey and brown samples were worked on 7 mm needles. The blue sample was worked on 6.5 mm needles.
